THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS
El presente progresivo

FORMA

El Present Continuous se forma con el presente del verbo to be seguido del verbo principal en gerundio (V + -ing): Be + V-ing

Forma afirmativa                              

I am studying English                            I´m studying English

She is studying English                         She´s studying English
We are studying English                       We´re studying English

Forma negativa

REGLAS ORTOGRÁFICAS

Al añadir la -ing al verbo tenemos que tener en cuenta las siguientes reglas ortográficas:

1. Si el verbo acaba en -e, pierde la -e al añadir la -ing.

    have > having          write > writing          come > coming

2. Si el verbo es monosílabo y acaba en vocal + consonante (excepto w y x), al añadir la -ing         duplicamos la consonante final.

     stop > stopping          run > running          swim > swimming          sit > sitting

3.- Si el verbo es bisílabo con acento agudo y acaba en vocal + consonante, dobla la consonante.

     refer > referring


4.- Si el verbo acaba en -y, la mantiene.

     pay > paying     

5.- Si el verbo acaba en -ie, cambia la -ie por y.

     die > dying   

6.- Si el verbo es bisílabo con acento llano y acaba en -l o -p, dobla la -l o la -p.

     travel >travelling  


USO
1. Para hablar de acciones que están sucediendo en el momento de hablar (ahora).

    I am listening to music now.
    She is listening to music now.
2. Para hablar de acciones que están sucediendo en el presente pero no necesariamente en el momento de hablar.

    We are reading a novel
    My brother is studying Spanish
3. Para hablar de planes futuros.

    I am going to the cinema this weekend
    We are visiting our gransparents next Saturday

4.- Con el adverbio always para denotar una queja.

    My mother is always telling me what to do
    

Expresiones temporales de uso común con el Present Continuous

now ahora
right now ahora mismo
at the moment en este momento
today hoy

STATIVE VERBS

Indican un estado más que una acción y no suelen usarse en Present Continuous. Se suelen usar en Present Simple. Están relacionados con:
  • las emociones y los sentimientos: like, dislike, enjoy, hate, hope, prefer, love, want.
  • el pensamiento y la opinión: believe, forget, guess, know, remember, think, understand.
  • la percepción y los sentidos: feel, hear, see, smell, sound, taste, touch.
  • los precios y las medidas: cost, measure, weigh.
  • la posesión: have, belong, own.
Algunos indican tanto estado como actividad y por tanto pueden usarse en Present Simple y en Present Continuous.

     María thinks it is a good idea. (estado)
     María is thinking about going to Italy. (actividad)

El verbo see en Present Continuous indica una acción futura fijada de antemano.

    My parents are seeing my teacher this afternoon.
