PAST OF "TO BE": WAS/WERE

Recuerda que en las preguntas que contienen una Wh-word, éstas se colocan delante de was/were:

PAST OF "THERE IS / THERE ARE"

Usamos there was / there were para expresar la existencia de personas y cosas en el pasado.
Se traduce por hubo o había.

 There was a concert in my town last Saturday.
 There were many students in the classroom.


PAST SIMPLE 
FORMA AFIRMATIVA

Los verbos regulares forman el pasado en forma afirmativa añadiendo -ed al infinitivo:
  • Play > played
  • Work > worked
Los verbos irregulares no añaden -ed. Tienen su propia forma
  • Be > was / were
  • Do > did
  • Make > made
FORMA NEGATIVA

Tanto los verbos regulares como los irregulares forman la negativa del pasado poniendo
did not (didn´t) delante del infinitivo sin to.

     I did not play football yesterday          I didn´t play football yesterday
     I did not work yesterday                    I didn´t work yesterday


FORMA INTERROGATIVA

Para hacer una pregunta en pasado usamos la siguiente estructura: did + sujeto + verbo

     Did you play football yesterday?
     Did you work yesterday?


Reglas ortográficas:

  • Con la mayoría de los verbos añadimos una -ed al infinitivo.
    work > worked
  • Si el infinitivo acaba en -e, solamente añadimos una -d.
    live > lived
  • Si el infinitivo acaba en consonante + y, cambiamos la -y por -i y añadimos una -ed:
    try > tried
  • Los verbos monosílabos que acaban en vocal + consonante (excepto w o y)", duplican la consonante final al añadir la -ed:
    stop > stopped
    plan > planned

USO DEL PAST SIMPLEUsamos el Past Simple para hablar de acciones y situaciones que sucedieron en un momento concreto del pasado y que por tanto, ya están acabadas.

   played football yesterday
   I did my homework two hours ago
   We went to London last year
   My father didn´t work last Monday

Expresiones temporales de pasado

Normalmente utilizaremos el Past Simple acompañado de expresiones temporales que indican pasado como:
  • ago (= hace)
  • yesterday
  • last week
  • last year
  • etc...
