La gramática inglesa: la preposición "for" comparada con "por" y "para".


El inglés no suele distinguir entre 'por' y 'para'...
I'm making this cake for you
Hago esta tarta para ti
I'm doing this favour for you
Hago este favor por ti
Can you sign for me?
¿Puedes firmar por mí?
Everything to benefit the country
Todo por la Patria
They're giving these things to you
Te dan todas estas cosas para ti
You passed thanks to me
Aprobaste por mí
She brought it for him
Lo trajo para él
A bicycle for two
Una bicicleta para dos
It's for today / tomorrow
Es para hoy / mañana (una tarea, trabajo etc)
For a beginner he speaks very well
Para ser principiante habla muy bien
Tomorrow I'm leaving for Madrid
Mañana salgo para Madrid
I'd like a room for three nights
Quisiera una habitación para tres noches
He's very active for his age
Es muy activo para sus años
for this reason/because of all that
Por eso / por todo eso
from what I've been told
Por lo que a mí me han dicho
by post / mail
Por correo
by boat / train
Por barco / tren (mercancía)
go by boat / train / car / plane
Ir en barco / tren / coche / avión

Ir en bicicleta

Vamos a ir por el parque (ej. un atajo)

¿Por dónde vienes?

Sólo trabajo por las mañanas

Cambiar uno por otro

¿Cuánto quiere usted por esto?
If it wasn't for the money
 Si no fuese por el dinero
En la voz pasiva, el agente 'por' normalmente se traduce por 'by'...

They were arrested by the police
Fueron arrestados por la policía
This work was written by Cervantes
Esta obra fue escrita por Cervantes
Un infinitivo que termina en 'ing' se utiliza para decir para que sirve algo...

A knife is for spreading butter
Un cuchillo es (o sirve) para untar la mantequilla
A rubber/eraser is for rubbing out
Una goma/borrador es (o sirve) para borrar
This has no use at all
Esto no sirve para nada
Cuando se hace algo con un propósito, no se utiliza 'for' sino 'to + infinitivo'...

I went to the bank to take out some money
Fui al banco para sacar dinero
I'm doing this to help you
Hago esto para ayudarte
Si el sujeto cambia, hay que usar 'so (that)' + algún auxiliar como 'will', 'could', etc. para evitar el uso del subjuntivo inglés...

I'm doing this so (that) you'll learn
Hago esto para que aprendas
He worked hard so (that) his family could have a decent life
Trabajó mucho para que su familia tuviera una vida decente
Y veamos el uso del infinitivo con 'to' en estas frases...

There's homework to do
Hay deberes por hacer
There are bills to pay
Hay facturas por pagar
Por + adjetivo o adverbio + 'que'...

However bad they are
Por malos que sean
However much you hate it
Por mucho que lo detestes
No se traduce 'por' por 'for' con preposiciones después de los verbos de movimiento. Se emplea sólo el verbo + la preposición de lugar o movimiento...

He went and stood in front of the others
Se puso por delante de los demás
It went under the table
Pasó por debajo de la mesa
The cow jumped over the moon
La vaca saltó por encima de la luna
