PAST CONTINUOUS
El pasado progresivo

FORMA

El Past Continuous se forma con el pasado del verbo to be seguido del verbo principal en gerundio (V + -ing): was/were + V-ing

Forma afirmativa

REGLAS ORTOGRÁFICAS

Al añadir la -ing al verbo tenemos que tener en cuenta las siguientes reglas ortográficas:

1. Si el verbo acaba en -e, pierde la -e al añadir la -ing.

    have > having          write > writing          come > coming

2. Si el verbo es monosílabo y acaba en vocal + consonante (excepto w y x), al añadir la -ing         duplicamos la consonante final.

     stop > stopping          run > running          swim > swimming          sit > sitting

3.- Si el verbo es bisílabo con acento agudo y acaba en vocal + consonante, dobla la consonante.

     refer > referring


4.- Si el verbo acaba en -y, la mantiene.

     pay > paying     

5.- Si el verbo acaba en -ie, cambia la -ie por y.

     die > dying   

6.- Si el verbo es bisílabo con acento llano y acaba en -l o -p, dobla la -l o la -p.

     travel >travelling  


USO
1. Para hablar de acciones que estaban sucediendo en un momento concreto del pasado..

    was listening to music at 9 o´clock yesterday.
2. Para hablar de acciones que estaban sucediendo en el pasado y de repente fueron interrumpidas por otra acción. La acción de fondo va precedida de while o de as y la acción que corta o interrumpe va precedida de when.

    I was reading the newspaper when the light went off.
    The telephone rang while I was having a shower.
3. Para expresar que varias acciones ocurrían simultáneamente en el pasado. En ese caso van unidas por while o as.

    She was listening to music while she was walking.

4.- Con el adverbio always indicamos que una acción pasada nos desagradaba por repetida y monótona.

    james was always talking about his trips.
